Recycling Programs

Here at the Consciously Clean Refillery, we collect a variety of waste and recycling that cannot be recycled through blue and grey bin curbside pickup. Keep reading for a list of what we accept and what programs we use to recycle our waste!

TLDR: Waste We Accept

  • Beauty care waste

  • Oral care waste

  • Flexible plastics and candy wrappers

  • Used batteries

  • Writing tools

  • Sharps (old razors/razorblades)

  • Any waste accepted in TerraCycle's free recycling programs

TerraCycle

TerraCycle is a private waste management company based in the U.S. which operates globally to eliminate the idea of waste. They partner with brands to create free recycling programs for products that are generally not locally recyclable, and then they process and sort the recycled products into raw materials which are used to create a variety of different end products! Click here to read more about what TerraCycle does with our waste.

We accept any type of waste included in TerraCycle's free recycling programs. If you'd like to see the full list of programs and the products/brands they recycle, click here to visit their website!

Beauty Care Waste — in partnership with TerraCycle, we collect any beauty care products that are not recyclable through curbside. Feel free to bring any makeup packaging, lipstick/gloss/chapstick, skincare waste, and lotion bottles/packaging to our store, and drop it off in the white bin labelled "Beauty Care Waste" in the front entrance. Unsure about what products we will take? Feel free to ask our staff in store, or send us an email at consciouslycleanrefillery@gmail.com!

Oral Care Waste — also with TerraCycle, we collect oral care products that cannot be recycled through curbside. Bring in any toothbrushes, empty toothpaste packaging, and floss containers and drop your waste in the white bin labelled "Oral Care Waste" in the front entrance.

Recycle Your Batteries, Canada!

Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! is a battery collection program run by a not-for-profit, with the goal of protecting and preserving the environment. Starting in 2026, they have expanded throughout New Brunswick and there is a growing number of battery drop off sites available throughout the province.

We are proud to be a battery drop off location! Here are some best practices:

  • Collect: Store dry cell batteries in a non-metal container like a glass or plastic jar. Common dry cell batteries under 5 kg are welcome, including AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, button cells, and rechargeable batteries. Some locations also accept e-bike and e-scooter batteries!
  • Protect: Tape over the terminals of lithium, rechargeable and alkaline batteries over 9V to prevent sparks. You should store your batteries in a cool dry location, away from the sun.
  • Drop Off: Drop off your batteries at least every 3 months to avoid corrosion.

You'll find our battery drop-off container in the front entryway!

Writing Instrument Free Recycling Program

In partnership with TerraCycle, Staples offers free recycling for writing instruments. You can find drop-off locations on their website, or you can bring your writing instruments to us in store and we can take care of it for you!

We accept all brands of pens and pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers and marker caps, highlighters and highlighter caps, permanent markers and permanent marker caps.

If you'd like to recycle your writing instruments at our store, just drop them off to a staff member at the counter!

Fredericton Redemption Centres

Here in Fredericton, there are two main redemption centres that accept specific kinds of waste that isn't included in curbside recycling pickup:

  • The Northside Redemption Centre: 213 MacFarlane Street
  • The Southside Redemption Centre: 70 Timothy Avenue South

Click here to view a detailed guide of what waste is generally accepted at redemption centres across New Brunswick!

Recently, the City of Fredericton created the Fredericton WasteSmart App, which allows you to explore local options for recycling, repairing, and donating various items, as well as second-hand shopping locations. Check it out here!

We accept flexible plastics, candy wrappers, and glass jars and bottles that aren't accepted by Fredericton's recycling curbside pickup, and we drop off this waste at our local redemption centre. Feel free to bring your materials to our store, and sort them into the recycling bags located in our front entryway.

Circular Materials Atlantic

Circular Materials Atlantic is part of a national not-for-profit, and they manage New Brunswick's recycling program. In Fredericton, they oversee the blue and grey bin curbside recycling, and the multi-unit residential recycling collection. Circular Materials Atlantic also works with New Brunswick's redemption centres to accept a wider range of materials not traditionally considered recyclable.

At our store, we do not accept waste that can be recycled locally through curbside or multi-unit residential recycling collection. If you are living in a multi-unit residence and your building does not have recycling services, your property owner or landlord is required to register for recycling collection under the City of Fredericton’s updated waste by-law. Click here for more information on the City of Fredericton website!

Although we do not accept curbside recycling material, we do take container and jar donations for our wonderful free Jar Library! If you have plastic containers, jugs, glass jars or bottles that are in good condition, you can drop them off in store and we will clean and sanitize them for customer refills.
